With Halloween approaching, I wanted to do at least one event that references the holiday in some way that did not involve cross dressing. Thanks, to Greg’s List (no affiliation), I found this small, low-key pumpkin carving contest at Helix, a bar I’ve been to exactly once, for a birthday party probably 5 years ago. Always liked the place, but nowadays Churchkey‘s tractor beam is just too strong to ever go to another place within a 2 block radius (sorry Ghana Cafe, I’ll make it there at some point).
The participants numbered a little fewer than either I, or I think the bar, anticipated based on recollections from last year, but for a Wednesday night in Logan Circle area, the event turned out to be a pretty good choice. As with any competition, some people take it seriously enough to impress and that was all we were asking.
One of our interviews reminded us that we still need to go back and watch Portlandia. It also brought to the surface our discontent with pumpkin beer, which we find to be not very good on the whole. A little dark for our non-light-enabled shooting style, but worked out just the same.
